Dan Perchun congratulated the athletes who participated in the Universiade and thanked them for their efforts, emphasizing that the results achieved are examples of excellence and a reason for the whole country to be proud. “Once again, you have demonstrated that Moldovan sport has a future. You are an example for the youth in Moldova,” the minister said.
The minister also said that the government is currently working out a government decision that would allow increasing the bonuses for Moldovan sportspeople who take part in large-scale international competitions. The Universiade is one of them.
Within the framework of the World Universiade, 234 sets of medals were awarded in 18 sports. The winners in the team medal standings were athletes from Japan (79 medals, 34 of which were gold), the second and third places went to China (74 medals – 30 gold) and the USA (84 medals – 28 gold).
Moldova, with two gold medals, ranked 29th among the 55 participating countries, whose athletes won prizes. Our country was represented in nine sports – rowing, judo, table tennis, track and field, swimming, beach volleyball, archery, taekwondo and rhythmic gymnastics.
The Universiade took place in several cities in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr region – Bochum, Duisburg, Mülheim, Hagen and Essen – while Berlin hosted the aquatics (swimming, diving) and volleyball competitions.
The Summer Universiade is held under the auspices of the International University Sports Federation every two years. It is the youth analog of the Olympics. The sporting event is also called the World University Games. The next Summer Universiade will be hosted by South Korea in 2027.
