Insurers are suffering losses

Insurance companies’ financial results for the first nine months of 2025 have deteriorated, causing the profitability of insurance market operators to halve.

Revenues for the market as a whole grew by a paltry 0.3%, while expenses increased by 3.7%. As a result, pre-tax profit for the same period decreased by 48%, compared to the same period of the previous year, and amounted to about 140 million lei.

In January-September 2025, insurance companies collected gross insurance premiums in the amount of 2443.9 million lei, which is by 0.9% more as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Since the beginning of the year, insurers have paid compensations and insurance indemnities worth 1,046.8 million lei, or by 16.1% more than in January-September 2024, the NBS informs.

The biggest growth was observed in insurance against fire, other natural disasters and other property insurance (by 23.1%). Other general insurance decreased by 11.7%. CASCO showed an increase of 13%, MTPL insurance – a decrease (-7%).

“Digitalization has become the norm in the insurance sector and this has a direct impact on efficiency. The online issuance of “Green Card” certificates has reduced the processing time to two minutes, which provides additional comfort for consumers,” NBM Vice-Governor Constantin Scandrea highlighted the successes of the insurance sector at the conference “Insurance of the Republic of Moldova 2025” held on November 18.

The vice-governor also stressed that at present, the National Bank’s efforts are focused on the broad process of transposing the European rules in terms of requirements provided for by the Solvency II program, as well as on the full liberalization of the CMTPL insurance market.
