In January, customs under-reported 100 mln. lei

The shortfall was due to excise taxes. They were collected in January 2026 by 99.8 million lei less than in January 2025. According to experts, one of the reasons is that last year, car dealers stocked more goods than usual because of the changes in the taxation of cars, planned from the beginning of this year. From January 2026 it was planned to replace excise taxes with VAT. Although these changes were reversed at the end of the year, this year’s import figures are down on last year’s figures.
