According to the National Food Safety Agency of Moldova (ANSA), the agency applied the precautionary principle and temporarily suspended imports of poultry meat and poultry meat products from Ukraine.

This followed the discovery of the antimicrobial drug metronidazole, a toxic substance banned for more than 20 years, in Ukrainian feed with official safety certificates. The investigation revealed the free sale of veterinary drugs based on it in Ukraine despite local bans.

“The Agency informs the public and economic operators of the decision to temporarily suspend imports of poultry meat and poultry meat products originating in Ukraine. The measure was taken based on the precautionary principle in order to protect the health of consumers in the Republic of Moldova and to ensure that only safe and harmless food products enter the market,” the agency said in a statement published on its website.

Imports will be resumed only after Kiev provides guarantees of effective quality control of products, ANSA said.
