“High season” in grain exports

Apart from wheat, the “big triad” of Moldovan grain exports is formed by corn – 20% of turnover (19 thousand tons) and barley – 15% (14 thousand tons). The export grain basket also includes sorghum, buckwheat, rye and even a symbolic amount of rice. In total, Moldova exported just under 1 thousand tons of these niche crops in November.

As agro-marketing expert Iurie Rija notes in his review of the grain market, compared to the previous month, in November, external supplies of Moldovan wheat increased by one third. Positive export dynamics is also observed for other main types of grain. Traditionally, November-December is the beginning of the “high season” on the grain market of Moldova and the Black Sea region as a whole.

It is noteworthy that in terms of prices the ranking of the “big triad” of export grain is arranged in mirror order with respect to physical volumes of supplies. The maximum level of average prices appeared in November contracts for barley exports – 4256 lei/t, corn takes the second position – 3787 lei/t, and wheat only the third – 3666 lei/t.
