Heart disease accounts for 60% of mortality in Moldova

According to the NBS, the mortality rate of the population from all causes is decreasing. In 2024, 33.5 thousand cases were registered, compared to 33.8 thousand in the previous year. Over the past ten years, the mortality rate has fluctuated between 39,000 and 36,000 cases per year, with peaks (40,000 to 45,000) in 2020-2021.

According to the National Agency for Public Health, the structure of mortality by the main classes of causes of death is as follows: 57.6% of registered deaths are caused by diseases of the circulatory system (53.2% in 2021), 17.4% by malignant neoplasms, 8.1% by diseases of the digestive organs, 5.0% by diseases of the respiratory organs, 4.7% by accidents, poisoning and injuries, and 7.2% by other causes.

According to the main classes of diagnosis, the causes of death are different for men and women. Women’s mortality from diseases of the circulatory system is 14.5 p.p. higher than men’s (in 2021 – 10.7% higher), which allows us to observe the phenomenon of “excess female mortality” for this cause of death. Excess male mortality is observed in the mortality rates from accidents, poisoning and injuries, malignant tumors and respiratory diseases.

Specialists attribute the phenomenon of “excess female mortality” from heart disease to social and economic differences between men and women, which may affect their access to resources, medical care and opportunities for a healthy lifestyle compared to other European countries.
