According to the recently released Forbes ranking of the world’s wealthiest athletes, the Swiss has an estimated fortune of $1.1 billion, making him one of only eight billionaire athletes in history (see table). Federer is the second tennis player in the ranking. Since 2007, the prestigious list has included Ion Ciriac, a Romanian entrepreneur, winner of the 1970 Rollan Garros (French Open tennis championship) in doubles, who has been investing in real estate and providing financial consulting services for many years.

Federer will end his tennis career in 2022. During more than 20 years of playing at the highest level, he earned $130 million in prize money – about 11% of his total fortune. The Swiss is the face of many major brands, notable among them Mercedes-Benz, Rolex, Moët & Chandon, and Chocoladefabriken. And one 10-year contract with the Japanese manufacturer of casual clothing “Uniqlo” allowed the 44-year-old native of Basel to earn $300 million.

One of the most recognizable Swiss citizens in the world is actively engaged in investing. He has invested his own money in sports shoe manufacturer On (he presumably owns 3% of the company), Credit Suisse bank (UBS Group), private aviation operator NetJets and eyewear manufacturer Oliver Peoples.

Federer’s fortune continues to grow thanks to the team of financial advisors he has assembled around him. They use the services of the management company “Team 8”, founded in 2013 by Tony Godsick, the former professional tennis player’s personal manager. The Swiss’ capital is also controlled by Format A.

The most significant share (about $500 million) in the capital of the Swiss is the shares of the company “On” – a manufacturer of branded running shoes, based in Switzerland. Earlier Federer advertised another manufacturer of sports equipment – “Nike”, but took a risk and supported the idea of former triathlete Olivier Bernhard. The latter, inspired by the method of gluing garden hose scraps to sneakers, created a unique sole for shoes. The company is now worth about $17 billion.

The titled athlete pays a lot of attention to philanthropy. He manages his own charity foundation “Roger Federer Foundation”, founded in 2003. Since then, the foundation has supported 3.1 million children in Southern and Central Africa. As a priority, the foundation seeks to facilitate access to quality pre-school and primary education for the disadvantaged. Federer himself visits schools in Africa and interacts with the children.

Although Roger Federer can afford to retire, he still actively participates in various events as a guest star.
