Forensic examinations have become harmless

Until recently, forensic examinations were carried out by classical chemical methods. It was time-consuming, expensive and dangerous to health. The new spectrometer allows you to determine the composition of any metal literally in a minute. It has already been used to check the quality of jewelry in the case of a store suspected of selling jewelry with a false assay.

“This is a highly accurate device, and we use it not only to analyze metals and alloys – from sodium to uranium – but also to examine soils, powders, in the analysis of gunshot residue and many other inorganic substances,” said Svetlana Cotorobai, an expert at the Center.

Olga Cataraga, CNEJ Director, noted that the availability of such equipment in the laboratory makes it possible to carry out expert examinations requiring complex composition analysis, including for cultural and art objects.

“With the acquisition of new equipment, the speed of expert examinations has significantly increased, respectively their cost has decreased, while the analysis has become deeper. And the expert no longer inhales vapors harmful to the body,” said the director of the Center.

The new equipment was purchased at the expense of the state budget. Judging by the model on the video published by the Ministry of Justice, it is a modern spectrometer of the latest generation, providing the highest accuracy of analysis and unique speed of work. Given that the National Center for Forensic Expertise is facing increasingly complex cases requiring an interdisciplinary approach and the use of modern methods that meet scientific and legal requirements, the new equipment will come in very handy for the institution.
