According to according to El Pais, Madrid has banned the use of Rota and Morón de la Frontera bases for aircraft involved in the attacks, including fighter jets and air tankers. In addition, Spain does not allow U.S. aircraft stationed in third countries, such as Britain and France, to fly through its airspace. Exceptions are possible only in emergency situations.
Meanwhile, Spain’s other commitments to the US continue to be honored. In particular, the country participates in the provision of about 80,000 U.S. military personnel stationed in Europe. Also, Spanish air navigation services help flights of American bombers departing from the U.S. and striking Iran, although the planes themselves do not enter Spanish airspace.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said earlier that the country would not support the military operation, which he believes goes beyond international law. At the same time, he emphasized that Madrid is opposed to the Iranian regime.
According to Sanchez, the conflict in the Middle East costs Spain about €100 billion a month. US President Donald Trump, in turn, threatened to stop trade with Spain.
