EES system at the EU border expanded
According to the Border Police of Moldova (BPM), the entry/exit system (EES) is currently already operational at four border crossing points:
– Costeşti – Stînca, from 12.10.2025;
– Giurgiulesti – Galati, from 24.11.2025;
– Cahul – Oanca, from 24.11.2025;
– Lipcani – Redauts-Prut, from 09.01.2026.
Starting from Monday, March 2, 2026, it will become operational at several more checkpoints:
– Leuseni – Albica;
– Skuleni – Skuleni;
– Leova – Bumbata;
– Giurgiulesti – Galati, (sea and railroad checkpoints);
– Ungheni – Iasi (railroad checkpoint).
The EES system was introduced last year. It was developed to improve traffic safety and applies to non-EU citizens staying in the EU for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
The checkpoints scan travel documents, collect biometric data (facial image and fingerprints), and create an individual electronic file in the EES system. Children under 12 years of age and persons for whom fingerprinting is physically impossible are exempted from fingerprinting.
At the first entry the data is collected, and on subsequent trips the check will be carried out automatically, thus reducing the waiting time at the border.
Moldovan citizens traveling on the basis of a Moldovan biometric passport are subject to the EES rules. Citizens with citizenship of one of the Schengen countries, who visit the EU on the basis of a document of this state, are not subject to the EES system and will not be subject to additional control.
RPM specialists recommend citizens to familiarize themselves with the new requirements in order to avoid possible delays or misunderstandings on the official website of the EU (https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ro/ees).
