
The support measures were announced by the Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu, who came on Sunday, May 18, to the site of the recent fire, where he talked to the affected families. Starting from May 19, a team from the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection will work in Durlesti Municipality to assist the burned families.
“It is a great tragedy for the families who were left without a home and a roof over their heads overnight. We will do our best to be with them and help them in their time of need,” the minister said.
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolya also visited the site of the fire. He reported on social media that the affected residents were offered rooms in a student hostel, while some families, who preferred to stay in their apartments, have already been provided with access to drinking water. Other communications remain disconnected for the time being to ensure the safety of the building.
The Ministry of Infrastructure has asked the National Inspectorate for Technical Supervision (INST) for solutions to protect the building from the rains, as well as a full assessment of it to decide on the way forward. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, makeshift attics that put lives at risk have no place in our cities. Clear legislative changes will be proposed regarding building safety.
Also on Sunday, servicemen of the anti-aircraft missile regiment of the national army helped to remove things from the apartments affected by the fire.
According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, a report of a fire in the attic of a 10-storey building at 75 Vladimirescu Street in Durlesti came to the 112 service at 15:57. 148 firefighters and 31 units of special equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire. The flames were localized at 19:45, and extinguish the fire – only the next day, at 04:08. Rescuers evacuated 32 people, including 11 children, from the apartment building. Of them, 16 received medical assistance on the spot. After that, three were hospitalized.
As a result of the fire, the fire destroyed about 1500 square meters of the roof of the apartment building. The cause of the fire and material damage are being established.
