There will also be a new type of temporary driving license. According to the government press service, both types of modernized permits will be equipped with new elements protecting them from forgeries. A QR code printout will appear on the back of the document, which will make it possible to quickly check the authenticity through the government’s data verification portal.
There are also plans to expand the “Restrictions” information field, which will reflect whether drivers who fall under certain medical restrictions have the right to drive vehicles. This data cannot yet be fully accessed due to lack of space in the current format.
The updated license will bring the document closer to the pan-European models and will come into force from the date on which the necessary technical conditions for issuing the new driver’s license are met, but no later than May 31, 2026.
Currently, three types of driving licenses are used in Moldova. The 1995 sample of the license, issued for an unlimited period of time, is also valid. The 2015 and 2019 samples, issued for 10 years, remain valid until the expiration of the term indicated in the respective documents.
