Displaced persons from Ukraine continue to arrive in transit to Moldova

From March 1, 2023 to April 22, 2025, 72,403 resettlers received temporary protection in the territory. Of these, 54,598 are adult applicants. 421 citizens of Ukraine have humanitarian refugee status.

The Moldovan government decided in February to extend the temporary protection for the displaced persons from Ukraine for one more year – until March 1, 2026. In addition, some important changes came into force on March 1 of this year, which also concern persons arriving in the country.

The categories of beneficiaries have been expanded – temporary protection will also be granted to persons and their family members who are not citizens of Ukraine but have a permanent residence permit there. The obligation to inform local authorities about the beginning of children’s schooling has been introduced, voluntary withdrawal of status and some other formalities are envisaged. The issued documents are valid for displaced persons until March 1, 2026.

Moldova continues to host one of the highest per capita refugee populations in Europe. As of September 2024, there were still more than 123,000 displaced persons from Ukraine and more than 10,000 third-country nationals in the country.

Citizens of Ukraine, as well as other foreigners, can stay on the territory of the Republic of Moldova without additional legalization for no more than 90 calendar days during the last 180 calendar days. Foreign citizens are obliged to leave the country before the expiry of the authorized period of stay.

At the end of March 2025, 3,880 Ukrainians expressed their desire to become citizens of Moldova. 2,486 people received citizenship. As of April 22, 2025, over 6 thousand Ukrainian citizens received temporary and permanent residence permits in the country. Of them 72 persons have the status of foreign investor.
