According to Crypto Detective, the man in question is the son of Dean Dagita, president of Command Services & Support, a company that was contracted by the U.S. Marshals Service to manage the confiscated cryptocurrencies in 2024.

ZachXBT published the results of the investigation on social media X. It found that John Dagita uses the nickname Lick online. The alleged attacker got into an argument with a member of a group chat on Telegram about who had more cryptocurrency in their account. During the video call, John Daghita showed the details of his Exodus cryptocurrency wallet, which held about $2.3 million.

The alleged hacker then transferred another $6.7 million to the Ethereum platform. By the end of the dispute, Lick’s wallet held about $23 million. ZachXBT tracked the transactions and linked them to another address that received $24.9 million from a U.S. government address in March 2024.

Despite the high-profile case, it has not yet been tried in court. No charges have yet been filed against John Dagita.

Note that the detective ZachXBT does not reveal his identity and works only under a pseudonym. He started doing amateur investigations into cryptocurrency thefts in 2021. Before that, he was a crypto trader and was victimized by hackers himself. In 2024, ZachXBT gave an interview to the publication Wired. He said that he was able to return to victims about $210 million of funds stolen by crypto fraudsters. He conducts investigations at the expense of donations and grants from cryptocurrency companies.
