These two lines close the main power transmission line in the north of Romania and strengthen its interconnection with the Republic of Moldova. The launching ceremony took place on October 21 in Suceava.

With these two projects, Transelectrica will close the 400 kV ring in the north of the country, which is an important aspect of increasing Romania’s energy security and strengthening the interconnection with the Republic of Moldova.

“Transelectrica, together with its contract partners, aims to make a flagship investment in Romania’s energy sector. These are two large-scale projects of historic importance and the responsibility to complete them according to the conditions set and on time rests with us. The strategic importance of these two investments obliges us to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism. The closure of the Romanian 400 kV ring in the north of the country and the new interconnection with the Republic of Moldova represent two of Romania’s objectives and at the same time create opportunities for the economic development of the northeast of the country,” said Stefanita Munteanu, President of Transelectrica Directorate.

The 400 kV Gedalin – Suceava overhead transmission line is the longest overhead transmission line in Romania, which will connect Transylvania with Romanian Moldova through the mountains. The contract for its design and construction works, including connection to the National Electricity System (NES), was signed in August 2025 following an open tender with Electromontaj SA.

The value of the contract is 688.3 million Romanian lei (2.65 billion Moldovan lei), excluding VAT, with an execution period of 69 months. The contract is implemented in several stages: design, obtaining/updating the documentation necessary for obtaining permits, obtaining permits and executing the works.

The contract for the design and construction of the 400 kV overhead power transmission line Suceava (Romania) – Republic of Moldova (Moldova) on the section passing through the territory of Romania was signed in March 2025, following an open tender. The cost of the works is 133.4 million Romanian lei (511 million Moldovan lei), excluding VAT. The works will be carried out by Asocierea Electromontaj SA – ELM Electromontaj Cluj within 52 months.

The 400 kV Suceava – Balti overhead transmission line project ensures Moldova’s energy security through diversification of supply sources, aiming at creating prerequisites for its integration into the single European energy market.

The main objective of the investment is the construction of a 400 kV interconnector between the Romanian and Moldovan power systems, which will ensure Moldova’s connection to the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E).

The new 400 kV overhead transmission line Suceava – Balti will stretch for about 93 kilometers and will cross 17 settlements in Suceava and Botosani counties. With 302 high-voltage poles, this project will complete the strategic axis Gedalin – Suceava – Balti, which will become an energy bridge between Transylvania, Moldova and the Republic of Moldova.
