Such a demand was made against the background of the pollution of the Dniester with oil products. This was announced by Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder at a press conference.

He said that in the near future additional barriers will be installed at the Dubasari reservoir to prevent the passage of oil products.

“We appeal to all local state institutions, as well as to private economic agents to make an inventory of groundwater wells, so that they can be used to supply the population in case of need,” the minister said.

He specified that restrictions on the use of water from the Dniester were introduced for the settlements located on the river section between Rezina and Dubasari: the water cannot be used for domestic needs within 48 hours.

The minister recalled that the operation of the water intake station in Coseuti, as well as in Naslavce, had been suspended earlier. These sources supply water to settlements in Soroca, Floresti, Singerei and Balti districts.

The government blamed Russian Federation for the incident, saying that the pollution of the Dniester is “a direct consequence of the war near our borders” and occurred because of the attack on Ukraine’s Novodnestrovsk.

“Even at this moment, the pollutant continues to flow into the Dniester, and we observe that the volume of oil is much higher than the originally announced 1.5 tons. We need to call things by their names: the only culprit of this pollution is the Russian Federation”, – said the Minister of Environment.

We shall remind you that on Sunday, March 15, the government introduced an environmental danger regime in the Dniester basin. This allows the authorities to limit the intake of polluted water from the river, quickly mobilize resources and ensure coordination of actions to prevent a threat to the water supply of the population. At the same time, the director of the National Crisis Management Center, Sergiu Diaconu, specified that “the ecological danger regime does not mean that the situation has become critical, but only that the authorities introduce in advance a legal mechanism to prevent its aggravation”.
