CIS remains an important market

The CIS remains an important market for certain categories of Moldovan products. This was stated by Inna Voicu, Secretary General of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization.

Presenting the ministry’s position at the parliamentary hearings, Voicu said that the reorientation of exports to the European Union, which accounts for 67.5% of supplies, continues – and “this confirms the deepening integration of the national economy into the European market.”

“At the same time, the traditional CIS markets remain important for certain categories of products, primarily agri-food products,” Voicu said.

At the same time, Moldova’s exports still reflect the “transitional structure of the economy,” but diversification remains insufficient:

“The structure of exports reflects an economy in transformation, where industrial products, including electric cables, coexist with agricultural goods. However, low diversification and relatively little value added remain key challenges.”

As Voicu notes, the deteriorating trade balance is a major challenge. In 2025, total trade reached $14.7 billion, up 16.5% from the previous year. Exports totaled $3.8 billion, while imports exceeded $10.9 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of more than $7 billion. However, the secretary general says the economy is showing signs of recovery, with GDP growing by 2.4% in 2025. Growth was driven by sectors such as information technology, agriculture, construction and manufacturing. Investment also showed a significant increase of more than 16%, indicating improved confidence in the business environment.
