The Office of the Reintegration Politician promises to further inform on the outcome of the discussions.
Ukraine’s role
It should be noted that recently, the Ambassador for Special Assignments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Marko Shevchenko paid a visit to Moldova. Together with Ukrainian Ambassador to Moldova Paun Rogovei, he held meetings with Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri, State Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Valeriu Mizha, Secretary of the Supreme Security Council Stanislav Secrieru, EU Ambassador Ivona Purko, Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova Isabela Hartmann, as well as with the leader of the Transnistrian region Vadim Krasnoselsky.
During the meetings, they discussed the current state of the Transdniestrian settlement, existing security challenges, as well as the prospects for intensifying economic and political reintegration in the context of the European integration of Ukraine and Moldova.
“Ukraine reaffirmed its unchanged position regarding the settlement of the conflict on the Dniester with unconditional respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within the internationally recognized borders. No settlement model can call into question Moldova’s European integration or grant the right of veto on security and foreign policy issues. Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine and its attempts to rudely interfere in Moldova’s internal affairs have finally discredited Russia as a mediator in the Transnistrian settlement, turning the 5+2 format into a non-functional one,” the embassy said in a release.
Prospects for EU membership
The importance of strengthening the role of the European Union in the settlement of the Transnistrian problem in view of the status of Ukraine and Moldova as candidate countries for EU membership is emphasized separately.
The Bureau for Reintegration Policy presented Chisinau’s vision of solving the existing problems in order to stimulate the country’s reintegration policies oriented towards the rapprochement of the two banks of the Dniester.
The sides also touched upon the state and prospects of bilateral cooperation, emphasizing the importance to strengthen the economic interaction and to use the potential of the Moldovan-Ukrainian intergovernmental mixed commission for cooperation in the economic and trade fields.
