The agreement on social security between the two countries was signed in Canada. The document was signed on behalf of Moldova by Labor and Social Protection Minister Natalia Plugaru and on behalf of Canada by Secretary of State for Senior Citizens Stephanie McLean. It will ensure the recognition and protection of the work and contributions of Moldovan citizens in Canada.
It is extremely important that the document provides for the export of pensions and the summation of the insurance periods earned in Moldova and in Canada, if the worker does not accumulate the minimum insurance period necessary for their assignment. In such situations, he or she will be able to receive a pension in proportion to the contributions paid in each of the two countries.
An Administrative Arrangement was also signed to facilitate the implementation of the Social Security Agreement. Now, Moldova and Canada will initiate internal procedures for the ratification of the document, which will enter into force simultaneously with the above-mentioned agreement and will be in force for the entire duration of its validity.
According to the 2021 Canadian census, 20,456 Canadian citizens are from Moldova. Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development estimates that there are between 40,000 and 50,000 Canadians of Moldovan descent living in the country. The Moldovan community is concentrated in the cities of Montreal (Quebec) and Toronto (Ontario). There are also communities in Calgary (Alberta) and Vancouver (British Columbia).
Moldova has concluded social security agreements with 20 states, of which 18 are already in force.
