Banks increased profits at the expense of interest rates

At the end of the year, the net profit of Moldovan banks reached 4.925 billion lei. The main part of the profit (96%) was provided by the five largest banks of the country. MAIB remained the leader. The average return on equity (ROE) in the sector amounted to about 15-16%, while the leader (maib) had an ROE of more than 20% in some quarters.

Interest income played almost the main role in the increase of net profit, which rose to 11.16 billion lei (from 8.9 billion lei in 2024). At the same time, the volume of allocations for possible losses (reserves) decreased to 654 million lei (from 852 million in the previous year).

By the end of 2025, there were 10 commercial banks operating in the country (11 in 2024). The reduction was due to the completion of the merger between Victoriabank and BCR Chișinău in March 2025.
