“The state should not become the beneficiary of the crisis,” said Chancellor Christian Stocker, since the higher the fuel price, the more revenue for the state.
Overall, the price of fuel per liter in Austria could eventually fall to ten cents per liter thanks to the new measures, Stocker claimed.
The new measures should come into effect no later than April 1. The package still has to be approved by parliament next week: this requires a two-thirds majority.
Italy is also reacting to rising fuel prices. Giorgia Meloni’s government has drastically reduced taxes on gasoline and diesel: prices will immediately drop “by 25 cents per liter for everyone.” In addition, transportation companies will be exempted from taxes through tax breaks.
And even in warring Ukraine, the authorities are coming to the drivers’ aid. There, from March 20, 2026, the program of cashback on fuel within the framework of the project “National Cashback” will start. It will operate temporarily – until May 1, 2026. Under the compensation program, Ukrainians can receive partial reimbursement of the cost of fuel purchased at gas stations – participants of the program.
The amount of cashback: – 15% for diesel fuel; 10% – for gasoline; 5% – for autogas.
And what about Moldova?
In Moldova, the issue of reducing fuel taxes has not been raised yet.
The state announced its intention to partially or fully refund the excise tax on diesel fuel for farmers for the period between March 31 and May 31. Its rate in 2026 is 3978.95 lei per ton. The decision has not been made yet, but the limit of the maximum amount of support per beneficiary – up to 200 thousand lei – has already been set.
