The concept of lie-flat seats in airplanes caused an approving reaction among American users // Photo: united.com.
It is planned that by 2030 “sofas” will appear in 200 airplanes on long-haul flights. As reports “People“ United Airlines was the first airline in North America to offer this option for economy class passengers and has exclusive rights to the concept.
Additional amenities
Special rows of three seats will feature adjustable 90° folding footrests, ideal for families with small children, individual travelers or couples.
Passengers seated in rows with seats that transform into “sofa” seats will receive a number of additional amenities. They will be provided with a mattress, an appropriately sized blanket, pillows, travel family kits and a plush toy (if a child is present). The amenities will be included in the ticket price, which has not been made public at this time.
United Airlines executive vice president and chief commercial officer Andrew Nocella said economy class passengers on long-haul flights deserve the opportunity to get more space and comfort. He said the ability to turn a seat into a lie-flat seat is one of the ways the company shows it cares about its customers.
Up to 12 extended sections in the cabin
The airline plans to begin rolling out this option starting in 2027 in the cabins of Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 wide-body airplanes. It is planned to increase the number of these aircraft to 200 within three years. The cabin will be equipped with up to 12 United Relax Row sections, which will be located between Economy and Premium Plus classes.
While United Airlines claims to be the first carrier in North America to offer lie-flat, airlines in other countries offer a similar option.
