He is to prepare and draw up a program of activities and a list of the composition of the Government and submit them to Parliament for consideration.

“In consultations with parliamentary factions, today I signed a decree appointing Mr. Alexandru Munteanu as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova. I wish him success in forming a government that will be able to earn the parliament’s trust and fulfill the most important expectations of the citizens: ensuring peace, preparing the country for EU accession, strengthening the economy and raising the living standards of the population,” Maia Sandu commented on her decision.

Earlier, the president held consultations with parliamentary factions on candidates for the post of the head of the Cabinet of Ministers. Formally, the candidacy of Alexandru Munteanu was proposed and unanimously supported for appointment to the post of prime minister on Thursday evening at the political council of the majority faction PAS. However, it was unofficially announced by both Speaker Igor Grosu and President Maia Sandu long before the official nomination.

“Thank you for your trust, it is a great honor and responsibility for me, and I will try to respond to this challenge of my life with dignity. I will do my best to work for the benefit of my homeland, to develop Moldova so that we become part of a big European family,” Munteanu said after the PAS council meeting.

Alexandru Munteanu has considerable experience in the financial sector: he worked at the National Bank of Moldova, the World Bank, managed investment companies in Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus, and founded 4i Capital Partners. He is also engaged in public activities, is a Knight of the French Legion of Honor and founder of the French Alliance in Moldova.

Three of the five opposition factions have unequivocally announced that they will not support his candidacy. However, the PAS faction has enough votes to approve the government.
