On the same day, the head of state presented the new interim prosecutor-general to the staff of the prosecutor’s office. She emphasized that the prosecutor’s office is one of the key institutions that should protect the state and citizens. Therefore, it is important for this institution to be consolidated, effective and credible.
The new acting Prosecutor General had previously served as deputy prosecutor of the Department for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases. A day earlier, on May 28, the Supreme Council of Prosecutors nominated Alexandru Machidon for the post of interim prosecutor-general. Octavian Iachimovschi, the interim deputy chief prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, was also a candidate for the post.
The position of Moldovan prosecutor general became vacant after the incumbent Ion Munteanu became a judge of the Supreme Court. He served as prosecutor general for exactly one year. The decree on his appointment was signed by Maia Sandu on June 1, 2024.
