The Romanian Cabinet notes that the new road bridge will provide a direct link to Romania’s primary and secondary road networks and indirectly to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

The feasibility study for the bridge is at an advanced stage. The contract was signed on February 24, 2025 and the order to start the work was issued on March 19, 2025 with an execution period of 12 months. The deadline for submission of documentation is March 19, 2026.

The intergovernmental agreement will include detailed provisions on environmental protection, traffic flow management, financing mechanisms for the facility, tax and customs regime, conditions for crossing the state border and access to the bridge, as well as technical and administrative dispute resolution.

The document provides for the establishment of a joint working group responsible for analyzing and resolving technical issues related to the bridge’s connection to existing road networks. The agreement will also establish a joint commission to coordinate all project implementation activities.

The new Bumbeta-Leova road bridge will complete the network of modern crossing points across the Prut River, strengthening economic and regional mobility between Moldova and the EU. The project fits into the joint infrastructure and economic integration efforts aimed at facilitating trade, reducing transportation time and stimulating investments in the border zone.

The construction of bridges across the Prut is foreseen in the Romanian Government Program, and the number of bridges is planned to double by 2030. The total estimated cost of the first design phase of the four Prut bridges is 1.1 million Romanian lei excluding VAT (more than 220 million euros) for each project, and the source of financing is the Romanian state budget.
