This will open up new opportunities for the domestic film industry: producers will be able to participate in joint international projects and receive funding from other countries.
However, the project faces obstacles due to disputes between the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance over the need to pay a fee of about 135,000 euros.
“We asked to include in the medium-term budgetary framework for 2026-2028 an amount corresponding to our share of participation – about 2.7 million lei, but this was not approved. We continue to insist on the inclusion of this aspect in the medium-term budget for 2027-2029 and we hope that this will succeed,” said Anna Varzar, secretary-general of the Culture Ministry.
Bonuses of participating in Eurimages
Moldova already has experience of joint film productions, but participation in Eurimages implies more systematic international cooperation.
“It will give access to new markets for film production, as well as to resources from other countries as co-producers of projects. In fact, it will bring prestige to our country and increase the international visibility of our projects,” Anton Yaleu, head of the department at the ministry told me.
In order to join Eurimages, a registry of the state of the domestic film industry has been initiated.
“We would like to join in 2027,” the official clarified.
Eurimages has been in operation since 1989. It includes 39 member states of the Council of Europe and Canada. The fund supports joint film projects and promotes the development of the film industry on the international stage. It is formed mainly from the contributions of member states, as well as income from loans.
