These include 18.35 km of local roads, 6.77 km of footpaths and access roads and 1.42 km of district/municipal roads. This will benefit more than 43,400 people from 42 communities across the country.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the contracts for financing the new projects were signed on January 12 at the National Bureau of Regional and Local Development.
The new projects are part of the 3rd package of the program, which includes 133 initiatives approved for funding by the National Council for Coordination of Regional and Local Development. In early December 2025, the first contracts for 61 projects from this package were signed. Accordingly, to date, funding has been approved for 353 projects out of a total of 579 projects selected for implementation under the program.
Viorel Furdui, executive director of the Congress of Local Authorities CALM, told Logos Press that before the New Year, a problem was identified in the process of implementing the projects. “Not all projects – for various reasons and often through no fault of the local authorities – were implemented within the contracted timeframe. Therefore, it was necessary to transfer unused funds to 2026,” he said. – At the same time, the Ministry of Finance could not do this technically, because under the current regulations, the transfer of remaining money is possible only for capital investments, but not for funds used in the course of capital repairs, which are envisioned within the framework of these projects. Although repairs sometimes require much more effort and time”.
Recall, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development announced the launch of the road repair program “Europe Nearby” in early April. It was included in the Buget plus additional financing package. According to the plan, the program was to be implemented by the end of last year. The authorities planned to build and repair about 130 km of local roads and sidewalks in 100 localities of the country.
The program is financed through the National Fund for Regional and Local Development. According to the approved procedure, mayoralties submit applications, which must be approved by the National Coordinating Council for Regional and Local Development and endorsed by the government.
A total of 579 applications were submitted for participation in the program. Their value is about 2.6 billion lei. The amount of financing is linked to the size of the localities.
