A scandal in an apartment building

Moldovan authors Andrei Hincu (curator of the exhibition) and Tatiana Cojocaru, as well as four participants from Germany: Janina Totzauer (co-curator of the exhibition), John Gebka, Veronica Günther, Maria Leonardo Cobrita took part in the exhibition.

According to art historian Lyudmila Kulikova, the expression “scandal in an apartment building” evokes associations with the Australian reality show “The Block”. The participants of this show solve pressing worldly issues, household problems, are engaged in repairing apartments. The life of a human dormitory as it is. In its daily flow there are disputes and disagreements, and even scandals that become the cause of dramas.

This banality of human existence is presented in the form of installations, video art, abstract and figurative painting, ceramics.

Despite their differences, the artists share a common theme: depicting the routine life of modern people.

All within the framework of conceptual art, which was defined as a phenomenon in the 60s of the last century. Although the first object of this trend can be considered Duchamp’s “readymade”, his “Fountain”, created back in 1917.

Conceptualism is a reaction to traditional art, which, according to its representatives, is a mimesis, that is, only a reflection and repetition of the actually existing world.

The initial thesis is that in this art the idea prevails rather than physical similarity to the object of the image.

The artist presents something, such as an old worn out chair, which can be compared to its prototype outside the painting. Thanks to this comparison, it is possible to judge the work in different ways: someone will see mastery in the exact correspondence to nature, and someone, on the contrary, in the expressiveness of conventional artistic language. But this criterion of evaluation exists, it is objectively possible.

Ordinary sponges, indispensable in every household, are extremely neatly arranged in the form of a chessboard. This is a combination of the incongruous. On the one hand, they carry the poetics of Dadaist absurdity, on the other hand, they represent an ordinary household item, legitimate and necessary in the world of public utilities.

Abstract painting is no longer directly correlated with anything outside of it. But it is the embodiment of artistic ambitions: a gesture of primogeniture, a manifestation of one’s own self.

Conceptual vision is a world where fantasy, irony and playful deconstruction are intertwined. A world filled with a special meaning. This meaning provides an opportunity to push the boundaries of art, to look into its contexts.

The exhibition is organized with the support of the Department of Culture and Art of the City of Munich, in coordination with the administration of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Moldova.
