Profitability of insurance business decreased

At the end of the first quarter, three insurance companies went into negative territory, affecting the profitability of the insurance business as a whole, Logos Press reported.

The insurance sector as a whole, as noted by the National Bank of Moldova, was characterized by the growth of assets, capital and technical reserves compared to the end of the previous year. Average values of solvency ratio and liquidity ratio decreased since the beginning of the year – both for general and life insurance.

Meanwhile, net income has also declined YoY, while the combined operating ratio is rising. Three insurance companies recorded losses on the results of operations in the first quarter of 2025.

IC ASTERRA GRUP SA ended the quarter with a net loss of 3.3 mln lei, while IC TRANSELIT SA (-2.2 mln lei) and IC ACORD GRUP SA (-160 thousand lei) were also market outsiders.

At the level of the whole insurance market the net result of activity for the first quarter of 2025 turned out to be positive, net profit in the amount of 37,5 mln lei was recorded, which is by 40,5 mln lei or by 52% less than in the same period of 2024.

The return on equity (ROE) recorded by insurance companies amounted to 8.0%, 8.6 p.p. less than in 2024. Return on assets (ROA) amounted to 2.7%, down by 2.8 p. p. And the role of intermediaries in the sale of insurance products, on the contrary, increased.

The commissions charged by insurance intermediaries reached 159,1 million lei, increasing by 19,1 million lei, or 13,6% in annual terms. The degree of intermediation reached 65%.
