Young people are mostly dependent on their parents’ money

Young people are mostly dependent on their parents’ money

This is according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data for 2024, released on the occasion of World Youth Day, which is celebrated on August 12 at the initiative of the United Nations.

According to the institution, 35.8% of young people aged 14-34 are primarily supported by family. Wages are the main source of income for 34.1%. Other income comes from social payments (9.4%) and remittances from abroad (5.8%).

At the same time, the structure of income sources changes significantly with age. Among adolescents and young people aged 14-19, 77.5% depend on parental support, while in the category of 30-34 years old this share decreases to 5.1%, giving way to income from work.

In 2024, according to current employment status, four out of ten youth aged 15-34 were employed (39.6% or 212,900). The unemployed accounted for 2.3% (12,600), and the remaining 58.1% (312,300) were out of the labor force. Of these, half were covered by the national education system.

There has been a decline in the number of young people aged 14-29 who commit crimes. And those who do commit them are more likely to be involved in theft, hooliganism and drug offenses. The number of HIV and tuberculosis cases has decreased.

Overall, young people make up about a quarter of the population of the Republic of Moldova. Out of a total population of 2381.3 thousand people, 544.0 thousand or 22.8% are young people aged 14-34. Over the year, their number decreased by 23.7 thousand (-4.2%).
