Since the start of the Games, 35 sets of medals out of 116 have been awarded. The fifth day of the Olympics was the most fruitful for the teams of Italy, the USA and France, whose piggy banks were filled with two gold medals.
The indefatigable Swiss
Franjo von Allmen won his third gold medal in his debut Games. Previously, he was the best in the downhill and team combination. With his Super G victory, he became the first athlete in the 21st century to win three top medals at a single Winter Olympics. He also became the first Swiss athlete in history to do so.
Double success for the hosts
The Italian tandems Andrea Wötter-Marion Oberhofer and Emanuel Rieder-Simon Kainzwaldner were the best in the women’s and men’s doubles luge competitions respectively. They were second to the pairs from Germany and Austria.
The French are good on the track, in shooting and on the ice
Biathlete Julie Simon won the women’s 15 km individual race with one miss. For her, this gold medal was her second at the Games. Earlier she won the mixed relay as a member of the French team.
Alina Stremous, representing Moldova, finished 14th. She did not make a single miss, but was two and a half minutes behind the winner.
Toward the end of the day, ice dancers Laurent Fournier-Baudry and Guillaume Cizeron brought France its third gold medal. For Cizeron, the Games gold medal was the second of his career – he won in 2022 when he was paired with Gabriela Papadakis.
The Americans moved up to second place
Gold medals by speed skater Jordan Stoltz and freestyle skater Elizabeth Lemley boosted the U.S. team to second place in the team medal standings. The Americans have 12 medals, four of which are top medals. They also won six silver and two bronze medals.
Norwegians maintain their lead
Jens Oftebro won the gold medal in the Nordic Combined, besting the best results in the normal ski jumping (K-98) and the 10km cross-country ski race.
The award was the seventh won by Norwegian athletes. “Vikings” continue to maintain leadership in the medal standings, although their gap from second place has been reduced to two gold medals. The Italian team moved up to third place – the hosts won four gold, two silver and seven bronze medals.
