The first medal in the history of Georgia at the Winter Olympics was won by athletes in pair figure skating. Bad weather helped Austrians to win gold medals in ski jumping. The highest-paid female athlete at the Winter Olympics lost the battle for gold in freestyle skiing. The Canadians and Americans reached the final of the women’s hockey tournament, while the United States and the Netherlands are in a fierce battle for third place in the medal standings.

Georgia is among the Olympic powers

Anastasia Metelkina and Luka Berulava, representing Georgia, became silver medalists in the pairs figure skating tournament. They lost to the winners by less than 10 points and were two points ahead of the German pair – Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin.

This medal was the first in the history of Georgian athletes’ performance at the Winter Games. Georgia ranks 23rd among the 26 countries whose athletes have medaled at the 2026 Games.

Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara from Japan became Olympic champions. They were in fifth place after the short program, but in the free skating they set a world record with 158.13 points.

This victory allowed Japan to collect the same number of gold medals as Germany and France (four each). The Japanese are in 10th place in the overall standings, behind their direct competitors in the number of silver medals (five against seven).

Bad weather helped

The first-ever men’s doubles event was held in a shortened format. Initially, the third round was scheduled, but it was not held due to weather conditions. After the first five teams had completed the third attempt, it started to snow heavily. The organizers decided to cancel the third round and approve the final results based on the sum of two attempts.

Austrians Jan Hörl and Stefan Embacher became Olympic champions in this discipline. The Polish and Norwegian duos won silver and bronze medals respectively.

The Austrian team climbed to fifth place in the medal standings with five gold medals. Sweden and Switzerland have the same number, but are second in silver: the Austrians have seven, the Swedes have five, and the Swiss have two.

Did not hold

Chinese freestyle skier Eileen Gu, the highest paid female athlete at the 2026 Olympics, failed to defend her Olympic title. She lost 1.75 points to Canada’s Megan Oldham in the Big Air discipline and became the silver medalist.

Both athletes have already met at the current Games in the slopestyle discipline. Gu also took second place then, and Oldham – third. The freestylers lost to Matilde Gremo of Switzerland, who failed all three attempts in the Big Air final.

Best in short track speed skating

Xandra Welzeboer of the Netherlands won her second Olympic gold medal at the Games in Italy. She finished first in the short track speed skating 1,000 meters. The 24-year-old won the previous medal in the 500 meters. She is now a three-time Olympic champion.

First in bobsleigh

The bobsleigh competition started with the women’s single heats. The victory was won by 41-year-old American Elana Myers-Taylor, for whom the victory at the Olympics was the first in her career. She won three silver and two bronze medals at the previous Games.

Germany’s Laura Nolte was the silver medalist, while three-time Olympic champion Kaylee Armbruster-Humphries of the United States finished only third.

Americans and Canadians in the final

Team USA confidently defeated Sweden 5-0 in the 1/2 finals of the women’s hockey tournament. The second finalists were the Canadians, who defeated the Swiss with a minimal advantage (2:1).

In the final, which will be held on February 19 at the Santa Giulia Arena in Milan, the Americans and Canadians, as in the four previous Olympics, will play for the main trophy. At the 2022 Olympic Games, the Canadians became Olympic champions and will defend the title.

On the same day there will be a match for third place, in which the teams of Sweden and Switzerland will compete for the bronze medal.

Following the ladies

Men’s hockey teams are entering the playoffs. In the matches of 1/8 finals on February 17, Germany will play with France, Czech Republic – with Denmark, Switzerland – with Italy, Sweden – with Latvia.

The winners of the pairs in the 1/4 finals await the teams of Canada, Slovakia, USA and Finland, winners of their groups.

No changes at the top

Despite the fact that on the 10th day of the Games no Norwegian athlete became an Olympic champion, the national team continues to confidently lead the team medal standings. The Norwegians won 12 gold, seven silver and nine bronze medals.

The Italians with eight gold, four silver and 11 bronze medals still hold the second position.

The Americans, who won as many gold medals as the Dutch (six each), have the advantage in silver (eight versus five) and therefore sit higher in third place.
