In 2024, according to expert estimates and according to the survey of the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INDFC), the harvest of walnuts in RM was about 23 thousand tons (weight of nuts in hard shell).
As ANRM notes, three waves of frosts in April and early May did not pass without trace for walnut plantations in Moldova. In walnut orchards of early varieties (mainly local and Moldovan-Ukrainian selection), the yield losses will be significant. An idea of the situation in walnut plantations of the main export variety of the American selection “Chandler” will be more or less definite in early June. Some late walnut orchards of European (mainly French) varieties are still in bloom and their condition can be assessed in a representative way by the end of the first week of June.
According to Oleg Tirsine, ANRM Chairman, abundant precipitation, which started at the end of last week and continues this week, is favorable for the development of walnut fruits, especially for early- and medium-maturing varieties. However, even favorable precipitation will require from walnut growers increased attention to the phytosanitary condition of plantations and timely measures to prevent diseases.
