Ukraine has pushed Moldova out of the Romanian onion market

At the moment, according to EastFruit price monitoring, despite the fact that this week onions in Ukraine rose in price to 0.22 EUR/kg, their wholesale price is still significantly lower than in Moldova – 0.30 EUR/kg.

Sergey Alba, a specialist of Expert Agroteh company, noted in a conversation with LP correspondent that the wholesale price of yellow onions on the Moldovan market has started to decrease – to 4-4.5 lei/kg due to excessive supply and insufficient storage infrastructure. Nevertheless, in the short term, it is unlikely that exports of Moldovan onions to the Romanian market will resume (two years ago this process was quite active).

Apart from insufficiently competitive price and relatively small (for significant and stable supplies) resource of high-quality products, there are no large foreign traders specializing in vegetables in Moldova (unlike Ukraine). By and large, the domestic market of Moldova remained the main and the only market for Moldovan onion producers.

During the last three years, the wholesale price for onions in the fall on the Moldovan fruit and vegetable market has been stable within the corridor of 4-5 lei/kg.
