The European Union may consider a separate accession process for Moldova, separating it from Ukraine due to Hungary’s resistance in talks with Kiev, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said earlier this week.
“We are already discussing with member states what to do because no member state is against opening the first group of negotiating chapters with Moldova,” she said, adding that Hungary is so far only opposed to Ukraine’s accession.
Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanyshyna said that she considered unconstructive the assumption by European Commissioner Marta Kos that Ukraine and Moldova could be divided in the EU accession process.
“I am now on a visit to Budapest for consultations on the rights of national communities. It is not an easy dialog, but Ukraine is determined to find solutions that will unblock the negotiation process. Therefore, I consider statements about the possibility of making a decision on Moldova (without Ukraine) during my visit to Budapest as unconstructive,” Stefanyshyna said.
Moldova and Ukraine have acted together in the EU membership process, viewing their efforts as a tandem. Ukraine applied for EU membership in February 2022, right after the war with Russia started, and Moldova immediately joined the move.
