The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development has developed and presented on Tuesday, March 23, a draft amendment to the Methodology of calculation of tariffs for the transportation of passengers by road transport on regular inter-district and district routes.

The amendments give the National Agency of Road Transport (NAAT) the right to approve temporary tariffs, taking into account the rise in diesel fuel prices. In particular, if over the past 30 days, fuel prices rise by more than 30% relative to the previous period, the NAAT will be able to set temporary tariffs for inter-district and district routes. They will be calculated on the basis of the current tariff on the route and the average price of diesel fuel for the last 7 days.

Tariffs will be adjusted weekly depending on the officially approved price of diesel fuel. The draft notes that after prices stabilize, tariffs “may be revised”.

Since fuel costs account for about 40-50% of all costs of carriers, a sharp rise in price strongly affects the economic sustainability of transportation companies,” the ministry argues.

There are only a few days for public discussions of this project – until March 27.

Earlier, the chairman of the parliamentary commission for economy, budget and finance, Radu Marian, said that the transportation industry was the most affected by the fuel price hike and that the authorities are ready to find the necessary solutions to mitigate the impact on the industry if the conflict in the Middle East continues.
