Construction is planned in the city of Lahti, which is located in the south of the country. The new facility will have a starting capacity of about 50 megawatts with the possibility of expansion to 128 megawatts, writes Reuters. This will provide a sustainable infrastructure to serve millions of platform users in Europe.

The investment comes as part of parent company ByteDance’s broader program to strengthen so-called “digital sovereignty.” The initiative’s total funding is estimated at €12 billion. The main objective is to store European users’ data directly in Europe and minimize the risks associated with its transfer outside the region.

TikTok representatives emphasize that the new data center will be an important step in increasing the level of trust on the part of regulators and users. According to them, the infrastructure will meet modern security standards and protect the information of more than 200 million users from European countries.

Finland was chosen because of its developed energy infrastructure, stable political environment and access to clean energy sources. These factors make the country an attractive location for large technology facilities.

The company has previously faced increased scrutiny from US and European authorities over privacy issues. However, at the beginning of 2026, it managed to avoid possible restrictions in the U.S. market, which gave additional impetus to European projects.
