The weather continues to cause problems: ice, flight delays and power outages

Difficult weather conditions in Moldova continue to cause problems: traffic is disrupted, flights may be delayed, and power outages are observed in the north of the country. At the same time, the yellow code of ice has been extended for another three days, Logos Press reported.

Flights are delayed, traffic is backed up.

Chisinau International Airport. Е. Doha informs passengers that airplanes on the ground undergo a mandatory de-icing procedure to remove ice and prevent its formation on critical surfaces. Due to this, flight delays and schedule changes may occur. Passengers are advised to check the status of flights on the airport’s official website: airport.md.

Traffic is difficult on several highways due to unfavorable weather conditions. According to the National Police, trucks and buses are forced to stand on the roadsides to avoid traffic jams and accidents. Police crews are on the routes, controlling the situation and promptly responding to incidents. Drivers and pedestrians are advised to refrain from unnecessary travel and stay at home until the weather improves.

The Border Police and the Customs Service inform that at the moment there are restrictions for trucks on the national highways: the authorization to enter the Republic of Moldova for heavy vehicles has been temporarily suspended. As of 11:30 a.m., the restrictions are in force at all border crossing points. The decision was taken by the Ministry of Internal Affairs jointly with the National Road Administration in order to ensure safe traffic and quick reaction of emergency teams. The restrictions are in force until the road situation stabilizes.

Electricity supply

In the morning, S.A. RED-Nord reported 22 emergency power outages, which temporarily left 17,441 consumers in 37 localities of Drochia, Edinet, Briceni, Floresti, Singerei and Falesti districts without power supply. Since February 4, power supply has been restored to 35,500 consumers in 129 localities.

At the same time, Premier Energy Distribution confirms that the networks are operating in normal mode, there are no mass blackouts.

Distance learning continues

Schoolchildren are mostly studying online. In particular, in Chisinau, schools have switched to distance learning. Many employers have allowed employees to work from home to minimize health and safety risks.

At night, the mayor of Balti, Alexandru Petcov, asked residents to stay at home because of the ice, which creates danger on roads and sidewalks and increases the risk of falling trees. Business leaders were asked to organize remote work or to announce a day off for employees.

Medical institutions continue to see an influx of patients with injuries caused by adverse weather conditions and ice formation on sidewalks. In this context, to cope with the high number of calls, the Ambulance Institute has increased the number of medical staff to effectively handle the flow of patients. Six out of ten patients come with leg, arm or head injuries.

Meanwhile, meteorologists have extended the warning for ice and slippery roads until February 9. Throughout the country there is still ice, and on the roads – ice. It is recommended to pay extra attention.
