“This is our hemisphere and President Trump will not allow threats to our security,” the official post reads. The tweet is accompanied by a black-and-white image of President Donald Trump and a large caption “This is OUR hemisphere.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had already issued a similar statement on Jan. 4, the day after the U.S. Operation Absolute Resolve in Venezuela, which captured President Nicolas Maduro. “This is the Western Hemisphere. This is where we live – and we will not allow the Western Hemisphere to become an operational base for adversaries, competitors and rivals of the United States,” he said, among other things.

Trump, for his part, said that “American dominance in the Western Hemisphere will never again be questioned.” At a press conference after the US operation in Venezuela, he referred to the Monroe Doctrine, the foreign policy program of the fifth US president, James Monroe, which proclaims both parts of the American continent as a zone closed to European colonization and, in effect, declares the United States the dominant power in the Western Hemisphere.

The Republican called the Western Hemisphere America’s “home region” and added that the goal of the new U.S. national security strategy is to protect trade, territory and resources.
