The U.S. exited WHO with a grudge and a $260 million debt

This week, the United States rather noisily withdrew from the World Health Organization. The reason for the withdrawal was attributed to an inappropriate response to the Covid-19 pandemic: "failure to adopt urgent reforms and demonstrate independence from the political influence of WHO member states". The US payments, which were higher than those of other countries, also had an impact.

It should be noted that President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his intention to withdraw from the WHO a year ago. According to the law, all contributions to the WHO must be paid within the past 12 months. According to various estimates, the country’s debt to the institution ranges from $130 million to $260 million. However, the debtor felt that “the American people have paid more than enough.” A joint statement by the US Department of Health and the State Department said that the US had not funded WHO projects or made contributions for a year.

According to Reuters, the US was the largest contributor to the WHO, with the country’s contribution accounting for about 18% of the organization’s total funding.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Health Secretary Robert Kennedy in a joint statement accused the organization of demanding compensation and stressed that the United States to the last remained “the principal founder, the largest financial supporter and the principal advocate” of WHO.
