This is a strategy in which professionals accept positions below their qualifications for the sake of predictable income and risk reduction. Two years ago, the labor market was largely dictated by job seekers, but today the balance has changed: competition has intensified and the number of vacancies has decreased. In these conditions, even experienced personnel are reconsidering expectations and are ready to compromise.

Experts note that the reasons for this choice are not limited to the fear of unemployment, writes Forbes. More and more specialists are losing confidence in long-term career promises of employers and prefer stability “here and now” to uncertain prospects. Regular income is becoming a key factor, especially when it directly determines the standard of living.

The transformation of values also plays an important role. Representatives of the younger generation more often rely on a balance between work and personal life, abandoning the race for status. Work is gradually losing the role of the main element of self-identification and is perceived more as a tool to ensure a comfortable standard of living.

At the same time, this strategy has a downside. Prolonged stay in positions below one’s level can lead to professional stagnation, decreased motivation and dissatisfaction. According to experts, if a temporary compromise is prolonged, it begins to negatively affect self-esteem and the sense of meaning in work.

At the same time, “shrecking” does not necessarily mean refusing to develop. In some cases, it becomes part of a well-thought-out strategy – for example, when changing the sphere of activity or during the period of accumulation of resources. The key condition is to have a clear plan for the next steps.

Thus, “shrecking” reflects a new configuration of the labor market, in which stability becomes a value in its own right. However, experts warn: turning a temporary measure into a permanent model of behavior may result in long-term career losses.
