According to Anneta Ganenco, chairwoman of the Association of Berry Producers “Pomușoarele Moldovei”, the so-called “shepherd rains” throughout May are the first good news for Moldovan berry producers this season. The average daily air temperature has not yet reached the optimal range, but there is hope that it will increase.
The next week may be enough for the soil on berry plantations to dry up, and its condition will not become an obstacle for rhythmic and quality harvesting. All this reinforces hopes for a good harvest of strawberries, at least early and medium-ripening varieties.
According to the estimation of Dmitri Dodica, director of Anastasia Trading&Services SRL, since the beginning of the current decade, the production of berries in the Republic of Moldova has been decreasing by 5-15% annually.
Last year it was 17.1 thousand tons, in 2023 – 20.8 thousand tons. Strawberries account for about half of this volume of production.
