Vlad Batrincea, PSRM deputy parliamentary speaker, said that “PAS is changing the law to suit itself and this is unacceptable.”

“The collective opposition has issued a joint statement. We will send relevant appeals to the Council of Europe, the Venice Commission and the EU Delegation to Moldova. We do not rule out joint protest actions by the entire opposition,” the MP said.

We shall remind you that the parliament, by PAS votes, adopted an amendment according to which the members of the Commission for the Vetting of Prosecutors are appointed by at least 51 votes of MPs. Previously, this required a minimum of 61 votes. The amendment was made after the previously majority faction did not have enough votes to appoint Dutch citizen Herman von Hebel to the commission.

Following the amendment, Parliament appointed Herman von Hebel and Bernard Lavigne as members of the Commission for the External Evaluation of Prosecutors. Fifty-three PAS MPs voted in favor of the relevant draft resolution.

Opposition parties left the session hall in protest and held a joint briefing where they announced that the decision would be challenged in the Constitutional Court. The opposition demands to recognize the appeal as admissible, suspend the relevant articles of the law, check their constitutionality and declare these provisions unconstitutional.
