The most prestigious international event dedicated to wine is the World Grape and Wine Congress

On Monday, June 16, the World Grape and Wine Congress will start, which will be held for the first time in the Republic of Moldova. The event is expected to be attended by more than 500 participants, researchers, winemakers, oenologists, producers and politicians from 51 member countries of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). Among them: OIV Director General John Barker, OIV President Yvette van der Merwe, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Ludmila Catlabuga and others.

The Congress will also be attended by specialists from Moldova, who will present the latest research and results of applied studies in the field of viticulture and winemaking, contributing to the promotion of domestic scientific experience at the international level.

“The presentations of our scientists are in line with the themes of the Congress and reflect the most pressing problems in viticulture, enology, economics and nutrition. We will have valuable presentations on grape varieties resistant to climate change, precision viticulture, building sustainable value chains in the wine industry, digitalization and automation of winemaking processes, legal framework in the production and promotion of alcoholic beverages. Of interest is the link between responsible wine consumption and health, as well as the use of secondary wine products in other products beneficial to human health. One of the topics for discussion is the potential of the local grape varieties Rara nägre and Fetjaska nägre in the context of current trends in the industry, such as precision viticulture, the use of climate data to prevent vine diseases or the use of artificial intelligence in the wine assembly process,” said the President of the OIV Scientific Committee, Prof. Dr. habilitatis techniciens Gheorghe Arpentin.

The theme of the Congress has been chosen as “Shaping the future of wine: embracing sustainability, enhancing value, encouraging innovation”. The discussions will take place in four scientific commissions, which will address more than 300 topics of global importance in the sector. Of these, 29 will be presented by Moldovan researchers in viticulture and related industries.

On the first day of the OIV World Congress, 15 wineries of the country will have the opportunity to present their wine products, which have won numerous awards at international competitions, to international experts.

Also on the occasion of this event, the Stefan cel Mare Park in the capital will be decorated with photo zones and thematic artistic compositions, while the Alley of the Classics will present an exhibition with the most representative grape varieties for our country.

The event is organized by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of RM and the National Bureau of Vine and Wine of RM. Our country has been a member of the International Organization of Grapes and Wine since April 3, 2001, being the first CIS country to join the OIV. In 2024, this intergovernmental structure celebrated its 100th anniversary, and the Congress in Moldova will open the second centenary of the organization.
