The Royal Club’s statement emphasized the fact that it had reached “an agreement in principle with UEFA for the benefit of European club soccer, respecting the principle of sporting merit, with a focus on the long-term sustainability of the clubs.”
Representatives of Real expressed confidence that the agreement reached will contribute to the resolution of legal disputes related to the European Super League project.
“Real” remained the last member of the Super League after “Barcelona” on February 7 officially announced its withdrawal from the project. Arsenal, Atletico, Chelsea, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Milan, Inter and Tottenham had previously left it.
The creation of the European Super League was announced in 2021. The project leaders, including Real president Florentino Perez, stated their intention to create a tournament with the participation of major European clubs as an alternative to the Champions League.
FIFA, UEFA and national soccer associations of European countries strongly criticized the project and threatened the participants with sanctions. Most of the clubs left the project in the first days after the reports of possible sanctions appeared.
