According to Falstaff Travel (Austria), the island of Capri has introduced rules limiting the size of tourist groups to 40 people and prohibiting the use of loudspeakers for groups of more than 20 people. Umbrellas and flags were also banned – from now on guides are obliged to use only inconspicuous signs so that tourists can find them in the crowd. At the same time, guides are obliged to provide tourists with headphones.
The measure is aimed primarily at reducing the flow of tourists arriving on the island for no more than one day. According to the authors of the initiative, such tourists do not make a significant contribution to the local economy, creating many inconveniences for local residents.
Protecting the peace of the islanders
Capri is not the first time to impose restrictions on visiting the island. Thus, in the 50s of XX century, tourists were forbidden to listen loudly to the radio and wear wooden sabots, popular among locals. Later, another footwear was also tabooed – rubber flip-flops. Like the sabots, they make a loud thumping noise when walking on the paving stones. The bans were introduced in order to maintain the calm, peaceful lifestyle of the islanders.
Tourists intending to visit Capri should also remove any plastic containers from their luggage. For carrying any product made of plastic, even a bottle of drinking water, a tourist risks being fined €500. Although the ban was introduced many years ago, it still takes many visitors to the island by surprise.
The island of Capri is very popular with tourists. During the peak season it is visited by more than 50 thousand people a day, which is almost four times the local population.
Tourists are attracted by the romantic atmosphere prevailing on the island and panoramic views of the sea from Monte Solaro mountain. Capri has long been a favorite place for world celebrities, and Roman emperors liked to stay here.
