European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Marta Kos said on Monday, March 16.
“Russia’s attack on the Novodnestrovsky hydroelectric power plant in Ukraine has polluted the Dniester, a vital source of drinking water for most Moldovan citizens. It is a reminder that Russia’s war does not stop at Ukraine’s borders. We express solidarity with the Republic of Moldova,” Kos wrote in X (formerly Twitter).
According to her, the European Commission together with member states is ready to provide assistance through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
Recall, the government of Moldova initiated activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on Friday, March 13.
“Through this mechanism, we seek support from European partners to quickly mobilize specialized teams and the necessary equipment to work on the ground. We are talking about means to collect, contain and eliminate oil contamination in water, as well as mobile stations for testing water quality,” Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu said.
As previously reported Logos Press, Romania was the first country to actively respond to Moldova’s call for help in eliminating the consequences of the ecological crisis on the Dniester River. The assistance provided included 200 meters of sackcloth (hessian); 600 kg of absorbent material; 2000 meters of absorbent rolls; 30 traps for oil products; 112 meters of absorbent barriers.
Additionally, the Iasi Municipality Mayor’s Office decided to help the municipality of Balti. In the near future, a humanitarian convoy of tanker trucks with drinking water will arrive to support the residents of the city.
