“The end of the fish mafia”: 56 water bodies received the status of objects of national importance

This measure aims at efficient and sustainable water resources management, as well as at preventing the effects of droughts and flash floods, taking into account also the degree of dam deterioration. Most of these reservoirs have a volume of more than 1 million cubic meters of water.

Environment Minister Sergiu Lazarencu said that the authorities will be able to intervene more effectively to protect these facilities. This is especially important when our country is increasingly facing prolonged dry periods, water shortages and decreasing water levels in rivers, especially small ones.

Viorel Furdui, Executive Director of the Congress of Local Authorities (CALM), emphasized that this decision is also important in the context of the delimitation of lands owned by the state and administrative-territorial units:

“For decades, the status of these water bodies was unclear, which allowed the interference of the so-called ‘fish mafia’. The approved criteria will create prerequisites for the remaining water bodies to be more easily delineated and registered as the property of local authorities. As a result – order in this very important sphere”.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean said: “The inventory of water reservoirs has already been carried out, but it should be continued at the local level. Our goal is to encourage the local authorities to transform them into reservoirs, because in this case, the government will finance the cleaning of the reservoirs and irrigation canals. There is water in Moldova – it just passes by us and goes to the Black Sea. But if we want to develop agriculture with high added value, we need to put order here. Even a little more order.

The decree establishes the criteria by which these water bodies were classified. Among them: water surface area of more than 50 hectares, average depth of more than 2 meters, use in centralized irrigation or water supply systems, presence of national roads on the crest of dams, or location on the state border line.

The state institution “Apele Moldova” was instructed to develop instructions for safe monitoring and management of these water bodies, as well as to prioritize and implement repair, cleaning and financial sourcing works.

The list includes 56 lakes and reservoirs, including Lake Gidigic in Vatra and the “Costesti Stinca” reservoir on the Prut River on the Moldovan-Romanian border.
