The Dalí Museum will be different: artificial intelligence and augmented reality will change art forever

The city of St. Petersberg (Florida) is preparing one of the largest renovations in the history of the museum dedicated to the works of Salvador Dali. The management of the institution announced a $65 million expansion project, which is scheduled to be completed by 2028. The new stage of the museum's development should transform it from a traditional exhibition space into a modern center of digital and immersive art.

According to the submitted plan, an additional wing of about 5,500 square meters will be added to the existing building, writes ArtMajeur. The architects intend to maintain visual harmony with the current complex, known for its Enigma glass structure. The new space will become a platform for multimedia installations, interactive exhibitions and projects based on artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies.

The main idea behind the expansion is to change the very format of the viewer’s interaction with works of art. Visitors will be able not only to observe paintings, but also to literally “immerse” in the artistic worlds created on the basis of Dali’s works. The museum management notes that this approach corresponds to the spirit of the artist himself, who during his lifetime showed great interest in experiments with holography, illusions and new ways of perceiving reality.

The project will be financed through a mixed model. A portion of the funds will come from public funds, including tax revenues from tourism development in Pinellas County, and the remainder from private donations and patron support.

Museum officials say the expansion will significantly increase exhibition space, create new educational programs and attract even more visitors from around the world. By 2028, the institution plans to become one of the most technologically advanced museums of contemporary art, where the classic heritage of Surrealism will be combined with the latest digital tools.

Experts note that such projects reflect the growing interest in surrealism and Dalí’s legacy. Thanks to the introduction of new technologies, the museum expects not only to preserve the artist’s cultural heritage, but also to present it in a format that will be understandable and fascinating for future generations.
