Supermarkets will be obliged to indicate the country of origin on price tags
The relevant bill was registered by the chairman of the Commission on Economy, Budget and Finance, Radu Marian, along with his colleagues in the PAS faction.
According to the MP, the initiative is aimed at increasing transparency for consumers and supporting local producers. It envisages amendments to the Law on Internal Trade.
According to the author of the initiative, now information about the origin of products is often indicated in small print on the packaging and is difficult to perceive. In addition, there is a problem of pseudolocal branding, when imported goods are disguised as local ones.
Without excessive costs
It is expected that increased visibility of product origin can increase sales of local producers by 5-15% in the fresh produce category.
The new requirements will only apply to retail facilities larger than 50 square meters. Smaller convenience stores are exempted to avoid excessive administrative burdens.
Fines are provided for violation of the rules.
“As for costs: no significant costs are expected for the state. For retail chains and supermarkets, the costs will also be minimal – it is just a matter of adding text next to the price, without significant financial burdens,” assured Radu Marian.
Earlier he announced draft law on short supply chains, aimed at reducing the number of intermediaries, supporting local producers and increasing trade transparency.
